New doctoral student: Gloria Sinato
In May, Gloria Sinato joined the Gastroenterology and Nutrition Unit at the Department of Medicine, Huddinge, as a doctoral student. Her principal supervisor is Peter Swoboda.
What will your thesis be about?
My thesis will focus on characterizing and defining the neuronal differentiation steps in a human ciliated neuronal cell model, and later exploring how these biological mechanisms might be altered and associated with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs).
Why are you interested in this research area?
During my studies, first in Molecular Biology and then in Neuroscience, I developed a growing interest in neurodevelopment, and particularly in its pathological declinations. I found the complexity behind the definition and onset of neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders fascinating and felt inspired to contribute to the identification of the underlying biological mechanisms.
What did you do before starting your doctoral studies at MedH?
Before starting my doctoral studies at MedH, I was a Research Assistant for almost 2 years in the Neuroscience Center at the University of Helsinki, where I contributed to the investigation of Schizophrenia pathology in human-derived neuronal models.
What are you looking forward to during your doctoral studies?
I am really looking forward to getting creative in investigating a topic that I am really interested in and keeping learning along the way. I am also excited about the many opportunities to take courses, join doctoral programs, attend seminars and conferences, and participate in teaching activities.
