Participants sought for studies Mental health and substance use among people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes
Researchers from Karolinska Institutet and Gothenburg University, in collaboration with Region Stockholm, are studying the prevalence and patterns of mental health problems and substance use among patients with diabetes.

Mental health and substance use among people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes is an explorative longitudinal study that aims to map mental health and substance use trajectories in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes (PWDs).
Mental health problems - such as mood and anxiety - are common among PWDs. These problems can complicate treatment and lead to an increased risk of complications, greater functional impairment, higher healthcare costs, and premature death. Likewise, high alcohol consumption can contribute to the development of diabetes, but it also negatively affects blood sugar control and increases the risk of several cardiovascular and neurological complications and premature mortality.
Despite this, knowledge about the use of alcohol and other substances in this population is limited, and both alcohol-related problems and psychiatric symptoms often go unnoticed within diabetes care.
Study procedures
This study is undertaken at Karolinska Institutet, recruiting participants at specialised diabetes clinics within Region Stockholm, Sweden.
Patients are eligible if they are 18 years or older, have been diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, have visited a specialised diabetes clinic in Stockholm in the past year, and are able to read and understand Swedish.
Patients are not considered if they are pregnant or currently are undergoing cancer therapy.
Participants are invited to fulfil a web-based survey including questions and standardised questionnaires on their general health, mental health, substance use, and social circumstances. Participants are then requested to complete the survey every 30th day for one year. Demographics are collected at baseline only.
Clinical variables related to diabetes will be obtained and linked to survey responses.
