Novo Nordisk Foundation Grant of nearly 7 million SEK to Anna Wredenberg

Anna Wredenberg at Karolinska Institutet’s Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics receives the grant for her project “Mitochondrial dysfunction – a means to understanding genetic and metabolic responses in health and disease”.

Anna WredenbergAnna Wredenberg is one of four researchers being funded in 2018 within the call for “Excellence project for young researchers within endocrinology and metabolism – Nordic region”.

“This five-year award allows me to recruit researchers to specifically focus on this project, expand existing projects and develop my group into a larger, more competitive constellation”, says Anna Wredenberg.

Identifying biomarkers and new treatment strategies by understanding cellular responses to mitochondrial stresses

The research project intends to unravel the early responses to mitochondrial stresses and metabolic derangements. A poor understanding of how the metabolic network is disturbed by a mitochondrial dysfunction has left many patients yet undiagnosed and results in limited treatment strategies.

The aim of the project is to identify new biomarkers for disease and dissect beneficial signals for new treatment strategies for both rare genetic inborn errors of metabolism, as well as more common diseases, such as neurodegeneration, heart failure or natural ageing process, presenting with mitochondrial dysfunction.
