Region Stockholm and Karolinska Institutet (KI) have the common goal of improving dental care in the Stockholm County through research and development. The steering group KI/Region Stockholm for dental research (SOF) announces funding for clinical dental research.

The human mouth is a bustling ecosystem teeming with microscopic life. While we often associate oral health with brushing, flossing, and regular dental check-ups, there’s more to the story. A recent review article published in Periodontology 2000 by researchers at Karolinska Institutet, collaborating with researchers in South Korea, Sri Lanka and Australia, delves into the intricate world of oral microbes and their potential impact on oral pathologies, including cancer development.

At the initiative of the SOF Steering Committee, a research retreat was held to bring researchers from KI Dental Medicine together with researchers and actors from public (Folktandvården AB) and private (Praktikertjänst AB) dentistry in Stockholm.

Tülay Lindberg, Associate Professor at the Department of Dental Medicine represented KI at the ceremony.

After scientific review by external reviewers and decisions by the steering group for odontological research, the following persons and projects have been awarded SOF funding for 2024-2026:

Franziska Hetrodt's research project is nominated for the best research report of the year by the Swedish Society of Cariology (SFFC)

It was at the European Society of Endodontology Biennial Congress in Helsinki 6-9 September 2023 that Joséphine Brodén won the award for best educational project

Professor Mats Trulsson at the Department of Dental Medicine, Karolinska Institutet, has been awarded an honorary doctorate at Université Toulouse III - Paul Sabatier, in Toulouse, France.

The Department of Dental Medicine continues to develop clinical researchers through freestanding courses at advanced level leading to either a master's degree (120 credits) in odontology or a master's degree (60 credits) in oral health or dental technology.

The KI South Distinguished Lecture series at the Karolinska Institutet South Campus welcomes outstanding international scientists to present their latest discoveries and concepts of interest to a broad range of biomedical researchers, clinicians and students. The seminar series started in May, 2021 and holds up to 4 lectures/year.

Petra Peterson at the Reconstructive Plastic Surgery research group, Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery, will defend her thesis "A multidisciplinary long-term evaluation of patients born with unilateral cleft lip and palate treated with different surgical protocols" on December 2, 2022.

Researchers at Karolinska Institutet have identified the bacteria most commonly found in severe oral infections. Few such studies have been done before, and the team now hopes that the study can provide deeper insight into the association between oral bacteria and other diseases. The study is published in Microbiology Spectrum.
