The Swedish Research Council awarded a grant at the department of dental medicine to support a project for the development of innovative approach to the management of periodontitis.

Nagihan Bostanci, professor at the Department of Dental Medicine, and her research group have received a project grant from the Swedish Research Council of SEK 2.4 million. This grant will support the group to continue to foster novel innovative research towards improvement of periodontal health.

Periodontitis in younger individuals can present with rapid loss of tooth supporting tissues and negatively affects the patient´s well-being. The research group’s main focus is placed on unrevealing the pathogenic mechanisms of this group of diseases on the molecular level. The ultimate goal is to design novel preventive and therapeutic strategies.

The funded project represents multidisciplinary research between several scientific fields including molecular microbiology, immunology, tissue engineering, proteomics, bioinformatics, and clinics.
