Karolinska Comprehensive Cancer Center (Karolinska CCC) will be the first center in Sweden to receive renewed accreditation. This milestone marks an important step in further strengthening the collaboration between Karolinska University Hospital and KI. Childhood cancer is now also part of Karolinska CCC.

Karolinska CCC has reached a significant milestone by becoming the first centre in Sweden to receive renewed accreditation. Karolinska Comprehensive Cancer Center is now accredited until 2030.

Karolinska CCC is a world leader in cancer care and research and brings together cutting-edge expertise in highly specialised cancer care and cancer research. The centre is a hub in the Stockholm region for the development of care, research and education in cancer.

Karolinska CCC is a joint initiative of Karolinska University Hospital and Karolinska Institutet, the latter in particular through Cancer Research KI, which is a Strategic Research Area at KI designated by the government.

Promotes collaboration between research and healthcare

The success of reaccreditation also strengthens the collaboration between the hospital and KI, and perhaps especially in the areas of diagnostics and research, but also other important platforms.

"Through Karolinska CCC, we have a very good framework for bringing together clinical and academic activities in the field of cancer, and the re-accreditation gives us continued strength to further develop cancer research in combination with its clinical applications," says Elias Arnér, chair of Cancer Research KI.

The accreditation means that the activities meet the quality criteria set by the Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI), which promotes collaboration between European healthcare providers and research institutes in the field of cancer.

Smoother transition for paediatric patients

An important change over the past year is that the activities now also include childhood cancer. The fact that the paediatric cancer clinic is accredited means, among other things, that the transition from being a paediatric patient to an adult will be smoother.

"The re-accreditation is a great recognition of our work and gives us the opportunity to further develop our research and treatments. Including childhood cancer in our operations is an important step in improving care for all our patients," says Eva Jolly, chief coordinating officer at Karolinska CCC.

Karolinska CCC is also leading the development of evidence-based practice and guidelines and is developing more profiled research platforms in precision medicine, cell and gene therapy.
