Jenny Mjösberg at the Department of Medicine in Huddinge at Karolinska Institutet, receives the 2023 Eric K. Fernström Prize for young, promising and successful researchers, for her outstanding research on the role of innate lymphoid cells in various diseases.

Since 2012, Jenny Mjösberg has led a successful research group at the Center for Infectious Medicine at KI. The work has resulted in unique insights into the role of innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) in various diseases.

The prize committee's justification:

“Dr. Jenny Mjösberg is professor of tissue immunology at the Department of Medicine in Huddinge at Karolinska Institutet (KI). She is awarded the prize for her translational, innovative and clinically relevant research, where she uses advanced single-cell-based techniques to explore tissue material from patients with inflammation or tumors.

Importantly, her research group has described how innate lymphoid cells (ILC) contribute to the onset and development of asthma, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), colorectal cancer, and pediatric-onset colitis.”

The prize consists of a prize sum and a diploma. The award winner is recognized at the autumn award ceremony during the Research Day in Lund.

The Eric K Fernström Foundation was formed in 1978 to promote scientific and medical research. The primary purpose of the Foundation is to make awards of monetary prizes to researchers who have made outstanding contributions within the medical sciences. Fernström’s special desire was to stimulate younger researchers. The Foundation therefore makes one award of a Nordic prize and one award to young medical researchers active in Sweden. Each one of Sweden’s medical faculties designates its own prize winner
