Harald Lund awarded the Bjarne Ahlström Memorial Fund Prize 2025

Harald Lund has been awarded the Bjarne Ahlström Memorial Fund Prize for research in clinical neurology, with a particular focus on inflammatory mechanisms that affect the function of the central or peripheral nervous system.

Harald Lund receives the award for his groundbreaking research on the blood-brain barrier and blood-nerve barrier, which has led to important insights into neuroinflammation and its treatment. His work has resulted in several high-profile publications and significant research grants, demonstrating both scientific excellence and great future potential. By combining advanced methods with a strong focus on patient benefit, he is making a long-term contribution to shaping clinical neurology.
"What a fantastic surprise it was to be awarded this wonderful prize! I am delighted that my research, which has largely been based on my own curiosity about how the nervous system is structured, is being recognised in this way. My research group is in an early and critical development phase. The award will enable me to purchase the necessary equipment to speed up our work and hopefully lead to new exciting discoveries. My students will be very happy," says Harald Lund.
An individual prize and a research grant
The prize is worth SEK 1,050,000, of which SEK 100,000 is an individual prize and SEK 950,000 is a research grant. It is awarded annually by the foundation, which was established in 2017 through a bequest by coin dealer and numismatist Bjarne Ahlström (1938–2017). The foundation's purpose is to promote medical research and support teaching and education in the field.
Board Chairman Max Mitteregger comments:
"It is with great pleasure that we award the prize for the sixth time in the spirit of Bjarne Ahlström. Once again, several highly qualified researchers were nominated, but after expert evaluation, the choice fell on Dr Harald Lund, who is a very worthy recipient. We will follow his further research with great interest."
