Bertil Hamberger receives the Swedish Surgical Society’s Honorary Award 2026

We congratulate Bertil Hamberger, Professor Emeritus at the Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery, who has been awarded the Swedish Surgical Society’s Honorary Award 2026 for his lifetime achievements in surgical research. A well-deserved distinction and a fine recognition of his outstanding contributions to Swedish surgery.

Bertil Hamberger has been of immense importance to Swedish surgery, both nationally and internationally. Many researchers have been shaped by his determination to bring together basic research and clinical questions into a cohesive whole. Bertil’s curious mindset has characterised his work to this day. His international engagement has been of great significance to European surgery through the UEMS, European Union of Medical Specialists. He has also made substantial contributions to establishing Swedish endocrine surgery as an internationally leading field.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of Swedish Surgery Week (Svenska Kirurgveckan). It is worth remembering that it was Bertil Hamberger who, during his tenure as Chairman of the Swedish Surgical Society, introduced this invaluable platform for the advancement of Swedish surgery.
