Call for applications: short-term exchange visits at National University of Singapore for doctoral students

Karolinska Institutet and the National University of Singapore offer a short-term exchange program for hosting up to two PhD students from each university per year.

The duration of the short-term exchange of doctoral students will be from a minimum of 1 month to a maximum of 6 months. Applications are invited for 1-6 months exchange visits taking place between May to December 2025. 

The selected KI doctoral students will receive a travel award to provide support for transportation and other costs related to the exchange of 25 000 SEK per person.

The National University of Singapore (NUS) is a national public and research university in Singapore and one of the most highly ranked academic institutions in the world.

Application

Applications are to be submitted to the home universities International Relations Unit. Announcement and guidelines for KI students can be found below.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants need to be admitted to doctoral education at KI at the time of the application and during the term of the exchange. 

Please note that PhD students are not qualified to apply to participate in the Exchange Programme after submission of their application for public defence of their doctoral thesis.

PhD students can only participate in this programme once during their doctoral education. 

Selection procedures

The selection of the candidates will be based on the scientific merit and feasibility of the proposal.

Required documents

  • Description of the research project (briefly describe your proposed research plan/project at the host institution and indicate why it is essential to your research/thesis)
  • Letter of invitation from the host supervisor at NUS, signed by host supervisor and head of the department of the host institution, where they agree to take on the exchange PhD student during the proposed period of time
  • Letter of support by the KI supervisor including confirmation the exchange is included in the individual study plan (co-signed by head of department at KI)
  • Curriculum Vitae

The application deadline is October 21.

NUS will require the payment of a mandatory Miscellaneous Student Fee of SGD 198.94 (approx. 1600 SEK) per Exchange Student (amount valid for academic year 2024/2025 and as amended from time to time), comprising Student Service Fee and Health Service Fee (including health and medical insurance) for the duration of the exchange at NUS.

KI students who are doing lab-based research will need to undergo an Online Safety Course organized by NUS.

Housing

Student housing within the campus is not available for Incoming short-term doctoral exchange students to NUS. 

NUS Graduate School (NUSGS) will provide a listing of private student hostels for confirmed exchange students. 

Insurance

KI advises students who participate in the exchange to obtain their own appropriate health insurance, accident insurance and third-party liability coverage for the duration of the exchange.
