Annika Östman Wernerson appointed president of Karolinska Institutet
The government decided on Thursday 16 February to appoint Annika Östman Wernerson president of Karolinska Institutet. She will assume office on 1 March 2023.
The Karolinska Institutet University Board (konsistoriet) submitted its proposal to the government regarding the appointment of Annika Östman Wernerson as KI’s new president last autumn. The final decision was announced on Thursday.
“I feel incredibly honoured and delighted to have been entrusted with this post. I am very much looking forward to working with all my competent and creative colleagues on creating a strong sense of community – a “we-ness” – in which we all contribute towards building a strong and enduringly successful KI in terms of both research and education,” says Annika Östman Wernerson, Professor of Kidney and Transplant Science at KI and in clinical pathology at Karolinska University Hospital Huddinge. She is also former Academic Vice President for Higher Education at KI.
On 15 February the University Board decided to appoint Martin Bergö, Professor of Molecular Medicine at KI and Academic Vice President for Research, as Vice President of KI from 1 March.
Annika Östman Wernerson succeeds Ole Petter Ottersen, whose presidency expires on 28 February 2023, having himself been appointed on 1 August 2017.
