Quirin Hammer and Daniel Sheward are awarded the Jonas Söderquist scholarship year 2022

The Committee for Research at Karolinska Institutet has decided on recipients from the Jonas Söderquist scholarship foundation for basic research in virology and immunology 2022. Quirin Hammer at the Department of Medicine, Huddinge (MedH) and Daniel Sheward at the Department of Microbiology, Tumor- and Cell Biology (MTC)) are awarded.

Motivations from the reviewer group;

"Dr Quirin Hammer is awarded for his work on the interplay of virus evolution dynamics and cellular immune responses. He is using in vitro experimental systems as well as clinical studies and mathematical models to advance our understanding of host-pathogen interactions. His work has important implications for outcomes of viral infection in patients, particularly the immunocompromised."

"Dr Daniel Sheward is awarded for his studies on antibody responses to viruses including HIV and SARS-CoV-2. He is using vaccination and infection models in mice and rhesus macaques, combined with in-depth serology and next-generation sequencing, to study the development of broadly neutralizing antibodies. This work has important implications for vaccine design targeting rapidly evolving viruses that are difficult to vaccinate against."

The funding is divided equally between the two awardees.
