Professor of Health Economics Clas Rehnberg to investigate national procurement of healthcare

The Swedish government appoints Clas Rehnberg as a special investigator with the task of analysing how the state can contribute to more efficient procurement of specialised healthcare in the private sector.

Increased state control of healthcare capacity
"We are now taking a major step to increase state control in order to make more healthcare capacity available across the country. I am pleased that Clas Rehnberg, with his extensive experience, is taking on the important task of analysing how the state can procure certain types of care", says Minister for Health Care Elisabet Lann.
Investigator with extensive experience
Clas Rehnberg is a Professor of Health Economics at Karolinska Institutet, at the Department of learning, informatics, management and ethics (LIME), where for several years he has built up and led a research group studying various aspects of the financing and organisation of healthcare. He has also participated in comparative studies on the efficiency and equity of healthcare, both nationally and internationally. Since 2025, he has been Chair of the Government’s Delegation for Efficient Health Care.
Hopeful that innovative solutions can reduce waiting times
"I would like to thank you for the confidence in entrusting me to lead this inquiry into how procurement of specialised healthcare from private providers can be made more efficient. The terms of reference open up for new and innovative solutions in which the state can take on a more central role in addressing the long waiting times. At the same time, I am aware that the work will require dialogue and cooperation between state actors and the regions", says special investigator Clas Rehnberg.
