KI president Annika Östman Wernerson honoured professor emeritus Hugo Lagercrantz with this years KI Cultural Award at a ceremony on November 6th. With this award KI celebrates individuals at KI whose efforts have brought culture and science together in meaningful ways - both within our university and in our engagement with society

Recipients of the KI Cultural Award can be students, teachers, researchers, or other members of our community -including alumni and organizations connected to KI. Everyone at KI is welcome to nominate.

Hugo Lagercrantz has been working as a professor and senior physician in pediatrics and neonatology, He has carried out internationally acclaimed research on children’s experiences of consciousness and the development of the infant brain.

He has written several books on these topics - both scientific and popular science works - and has organized several symposia on consciousness and the mind,  and hosted many  visiting lectures with participation of his strong international network. 

Hugo is a well-known and active member of the KI community. He’s a gifted lecturer and a frequent voice in the media, where he has addressed important questions such from children’s screen time to existential issues like When does the embryo become a  human being?

He also initiated the reading corner “Camera Obscura” at the KI University Library KIB and has been a driving force behind the establishment of the KI Cultural Council.
