Nature Medicine highlights two AI initiatives at Karolinska Institutet
In a recent article in Nature Medicine, two Karolinska Institutet initiatives are highlighted as key Nordic AI assets: KI’s Centre for AI Innovation and TEF-Health, the European Testing and Experimentation Facility for Health AI and Robotics, whose Swedish node is hosted by KI.
The article, An AI-Health Infrastructure for the Nordic Region: Technical Foundations, Data Assets, and a Roadmap for Deployment, describes the Nordic AI-Health Initiative, a potential future platform built on unique large-scale longitudinal and multimodal health datasets from across the Nordic region.
Coordinating Nordic key assets
The platform is proposed as a means of enabling secure, regulation-compliant access to data and the development of generalisable models that support responsible AI-driven research and innovation in medicine. The vision is to build on existing resources and coordinate them into an even more effective ecosystem, with the KI initiatives highlighted as key assets within this landscape.
KI as an enabler for Health AI implementation
The Centre for AI Innovation can provide the computational, technical and collaborative environment needed for advanced health AI development. By supporting secure multimodal AI research and bringing together academia, healthcare, industry and public-sector stakeholders, the centre can act as a Nordic hub for the development and evaluation of next-generation health AI models.
The Swedish TEF-Health node can support testing, validation, benchmarking and regulatory readiness of AI solutions in real healthcare settings, helping ensure that AI models developed within the Nordic ecosystem are trustworthy, compliant and ready for adoption in healthcare. In this role, TEF-Health serves as a deployment and validation layer for the Nordic AI-Health Initiative.
Together, the Centre for AI Innovation and TEF-Health provide complementary capabilities that can help transform Nordic health data assets into validated, deployable AI solutions with real clinical and societal impact.
The Nature Medicine article’s authors represent a broad range of European universities, university hospitals, specialised research centres and infrastructures, a national genomics centre, and two industry partners.

The Centre for AI Innovation (CAII) at Karolinska Institutet is a newly established centre dedicated to promoting the development and use of AI in medical research and healthcare. The centre serves as a collaborative hub connecting academia, healthcare, industry and other relevant stakeholders, including public authorities, policymakers and patient organisations, and operates at regional, national and international levels.
The TEF-Health project is establishing the EU’s Testing and Experimentation Facility for Health AI and Robotics, with the aim of accelerating the testing, validation and deployment of AI systems in clinical practice. The consortium brings together 52 partners across nine countries, and the Swedish node is the largest.
