KI maintains a strong position in this year’s Shanghai ranking

Karolinska Institutet (KI) is ranked 37 in the 2023 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai ranking. This means that KI retains its position as one of the world's 50 highest-ranked universities. The ranking has varied between positions 37 and 45 over the past five years (2022: position 41).

In the No. 1 spot is Harvard University followed by Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and University of Cambridge, which is unchanged from the previous year.

Among the world's 100 leading universities according to ARWU are seven Nordic universities, including three from Sweden. Among the Swedish universities, KI is ranked number one followed by Uppsala University and Stockholm University. In Europe, KI is ranked number eight.

ARWU’s subject ranking is published on Oct. 27.
