Karolinska Institutet is ranked 43 in the 2024 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai ranking.

This means that KI retains its position as one of the world's 50 highest-ranked universities, where the ranking has varied between place 37 and 45 over the past five years (2023: 37 place). Harvard University is ranked highest, followed by Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Cambridge, which is unchanged from 2023.

Among the world's 100 leading universities according to ARWU, there are seven Nordic universities, three of which are Swedish. Among the Swedish universities, KI is ranked number one, ahead of Uppsala and Lund University, and tenth in Europe. ARWU's subject ranking will be published later this autumn.
