KI highlights this year’s most inspiring student exchange reports

Karolinska Institutet is recognising three students who, during the academic year 2024/2025, have offered particularly engaging accounts of their international experiences.

International perspectives through the eyes of three students

Iga Ostrzyniewska (Bachelor’s Programme in Biomedicine), Alma Nordenstam (Medical Programme) and Marina Polo Gozalo (Master’s Programme in Bioentrepreneurship) are highlighted for exchange reports that demonstrate how studying abroad contributes to both personal and professional growth.

Iga describes how her exchange at the University of Toronto allowed her to quickly step into an advanced research environment, develop her independence and gain a clearer understanding of the type of research role she hopes to pursue in the future.

Alma reflects on her clinical studies at Makerere University in Uganda, where she encountered a healthcare setting with limited resources and complex patient cases. These experiences strengthened her clinical judgement and deepened her insight into global health and medical practice.

Marina shares how completing her degree project in Auckland, New Zealand provided valuable perspectives on innovation and business development within life science, and how engaging with local networks and a different organisational culture broadened her understanding of the field.

International experiences that broaden academic and professional horizons

Together, the students’ accounts show how exchange studies deepen subject knowledge, strengthen independence and offer a wider understanding of how healthcare, research and innovation operate globally.

By encountering new ways of working, diverse cultures and varied conditions, our students develop the ability to view their future profession in a broader, global context.
