International attention for KI research on chatbot advice for traumatic dental injuries

A recent study involving Dr Nitesh Tewari, PhD student at the Department of Dental Medicine, Division of Paediatric Dentistry, Karolinska Institutet, has received public attention in India.

The study, Accuracy of Chatbot-Based Health Advice Related to Traumatic Dental Injuries: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis, was recently published open access in Dental Traumatology.

The research was conducted within an international collaboration between the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, India, Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, and the Federal University of Uberlândia, Brazil.

As artificial intelligence and conversational chatbots are increasingly used to obtain health-related information, the study addresses an important question: How accurate and reliable is the advice provided by chatbots when someone seeks information about a traumatic dental injury?

The systematic review and meta-analysis included ten studies evaluating seven contemporary chatbots. Overall, the findings showed moderate accuracy, with considerable variation between different chatbot models and types of questions. The researchers emphasise that chatbot-generated information should not be regarded as clinically reliable, since incorrect advice in an acute dental trauma situation could lead to delayed or inappropriate management.

The study recently attracted the attention of a major news network in northern India and was featured in a public information report, bringing the research findings to a broad audience. The media attention coincided with the celebrations of India’s Independence Day on 15 August.

During the official Independence Day celebrations organised by the Embassy of India in Sweden at Hallunda Folkets Hus, Dr Tewari received special appreciation for the research and the attention it had generated in India.

The recognition highlights both the growing societal relevance of research into artificial intelligence in healthcare and the importance of international collaboration in dental trauma research.
