Title: "From developmental potential towards entelechy of nociception in the spinal cord"
My laboratory studies the neuronal mechanisms of nociception, or the sensation of pain. We are interested in neurons of the anterolateral system (AS) that relay somatosensory information from the spinal cord to the brain, allowing us to be consciously aware of it. Although AS neurons have been studied for many years, the lack of their molecular handles precludes our understanding of their precise functions. By studying developing AS neurons, we revealed a molecular logic underlying their functional specialisation. In my seminar, I will present evidence of AS discriminative functions: in perception of thermal stimuli, and the ability to perceive the location of noxious stimuli.
