Title 

Colorectal cancer epidemiology, screening, and emerging trends among young adults

Abstract 

Colorectal cancer (CRC) screening has the potential to substantially reduce CRC incidence and mortality, and by now most European countries have implemented population-based CRC screening programmes targeting individuals in the age range 50–74 years. In this talk, I will present data from a large international collaboration I led with 31 cancer registries in 21 European countries on CRC incidence, stage distribution, and mortality. Specifically, I will highlight the progress achieved in CRC control among older adults in the context of screening, as well as differences across countries. I will then address the contrasting and concerning rise in CRC incidence among younger adults observed in recent years in many countries globally. I will share data from my collaborative work with the Nordic countries and discuss potential implications.

About the speaker 

Rafael Cardoso is a postdoctoral researcher in cancer epidemiology at the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics. He works with population-based cancer registry data and has research experience in colorectal and breast cancer epidemiology and screening. He did his PhD and a first postdoc at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and has also worked as a senior editor at The Lancet Regional Health – Europe. His current work aims to comprehensively analyse patterns and trends in early-onset cancer in the Nordic countries.
