Title

Obesity as a heterogeneous phenotype: Differences among adiposity-related traits in relation to health during aging

Abstract

The negative effects of obesity on late-life health are well-established, but it is increasingly evident that obesity is a complex and heterogeneous condition, differing in causes and consequences. I will present projects aiming to leverage this heterogeneity to understand how obesity influences risk of age-related health outcomes (cardiovascular disease, dementia, frailty, and mortality). For example, that 1) metabolic health is more important to health than BMI, 2) obesity driven by genetic influences is less detrimental than obesity driven by environmental factors, and 3) in late-life, both low and high BMI is associated with adverse health.

About the speaker

Ida Karlsson is an assistant professor at MEB. Her research is focused on understanding how obesity and cardiometabolic health associates with health during aging, with special focus on understanding obesity as a complex and heterogeneous condition with different causes and consequences.

Faculty lunch

Join the faculty event in Wargentin! After the seminar, the faculty lunch will be served in Ljusgården. The faculty lunches are intended for employees at MEB, and a monthly net salary deduction of 260 SEK will be made for those who work here 20% or more. If you have any questions about the lunch or specific dietary needs due to allergies, etc, please contact internservice@meb.ki.se. If you won’t be participating in the lunches for all or part of the spring term, our new routine is that you need to contact hr-support@meb.ki.se at the start of a new term, to be removed from the list.
