Title
Involving a health economist in your research project: Why and How
Abstract
When launching a medical product or implementing a health care program within healthcare systems, demonstrating clinical effectiveness alone is not sufficient. Health economic evidence is no longer “nice to have”. In an environment of increasing competition for priority setting and resource allocation, researchers need to actively demonstrate its value for money. In this talk, I will: encourage researchers without a background of health economics to think from a health economic perspective; underscore the importance and advantages of integrating health economists into planning and implementing research projects, with examples using various types of study; and outline practical ways to collaborate with health economists at KI. Hopefully this will provide a clearer understanding of health economics and its role in strengthening research impact and decision-making.
About the speaker
Shuang Hao is a Health Economist at MEB. Her research centres on health economics and outcomes research (HEOR) in screening and treatment strategies across disease areas, particularly for prostate cancer. Through health outcomes measurement, economic burden characterisation, cost-effectiveness analysis and budget impact assessment, her research generates evidence to support informed decision-making on resource allocation and the development of sustainable healthcare systems.
