Title
Important things to consider when doing a research project - advice from a statistician to medical students
Abstract
On term 8 of the medical program, the students take the course “Degree project in Medicine”, which is given by MEB. During this course, the students carry out a research project and summarize their work in a written report. Those of us who teach at the course feel that, although many of the projects have high quality, there is also room for improvement. In particular, there appears to be confusion among many students regarding fundamental issues such as how to formulate a research question, how to distinguish between the causal and predictive questions, when and why to adjust for covariates etc. In this faculty event I will present a lecture that I will give to the medical students in January, where I will aim to sort out some of these issues. The purpose of the faculty event is to have your opinion – what would you like to convey to the students on the (very loose) theme “Important things to consider when doing a research project?”
