Lectures and seminars Bites of Learning: Using gamification in the classroom to tackle AMR

Welcome to Bites of Learning where Giulia Gaudenzi will share her experience integrating game-based learning into biomedical education. In this session, Giulia Gaudenzi will present a pilot workshop using the AMR Knowledge Space Game, developed by CAPTRS, to simulate the complexities of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The game fosters collaborative knowledge mapping and scenario-based strategy development, helping students visualise key drivers of AMR and co-create future mitigation pathways.
In spring 2025, Karolinska Institutet began a collaboration with CAPTRS to test games as educational tools within the biomedical communication course on the Master's Programme in Biomedicine, taught by Matthew Kirkham, researcher at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology.
Jennifer Valcke, educational developer, will moderate the session and guide the conversation around how game-based learning can enhance student engagement, systems thinking, and interdisciplinary collaboration in health professions education.
Target audience
Health professions educators, biomedical educators, curriculum developers, educational researchers and anyone interested in gamifications as a teaching method.
Why should you attend?
To learn how to increase student engagement and motivation, develop critical thinking skills like problem-solving and creativity, gain knowledge of new and effective teaching methods to improve student retention, and foster an inclusive learning environment where diverse learners can thrive.
The session will be held in English.

Speakers
Giulia Gaudenzi (guest speaker) is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Global Public Health at Karolinska Institutet. She leads educational innovation projects focused on interdisciplinary learning and systems thinking. Her recent work integrates game-based learning into biomedical education, particularly addressing global health challenges like antimicrobial resistance.
Jennifer Valcke (moderator) is an educational developer at the Unit for Teaching and Learning at Karolinska Institutet. She specializes in curriculum design, pedagogical innovation, and educational development. Jennifer also supports educators in designing health professions education research.
