Intravenous treatment with omega-3 fatty acids in elderly hospitalised patients in intensive care due to COVID-19 seems to have positive effects on the ability of the immune system to cope with the virus, according to a study from KI. In the future, the study, published in Clinical and Translational Medicine, could lead to a complementary, cost-effective treatment for COVID-19.

New study explains link between diabetes and UTIs
Lower immunity and recurring infections are common in type 1 and type 2 diabetes. KI researchers now show that the immune system of people with diabetes has lower levels of the antimicrobial peptide psoriasin, which compromises the urinary bladder’s cell barrier, increasing the risk of urinary tract infection. Rheumatoid arthritis drug effective against myasthenia
Early intervention with rituximab, a drug used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), can reduce the risk of deterioration in myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune disease that causes loss of muscle control. This is according to a randomised clinical study led by researchers at Karolinska Institutet and published in the journal JAMA Neurology.
