Twelve new interdisciplinary research networks awarded funding
The Committee for Research has decided to award funding to twelve new interdisciplinary research networks at Karolinska Institutet. The networks are intended to strengthen collaboration across departmental and disciplinary boundaries and will receive funding for the period 2027 to 2029.
Interest in the call for proposals was high. A total of 36 applications were submitted and assessed by the Committee for Research’s working group for funding calls. Applications were evaluated on criteria including the added value for KI researchers, the potential to strengthen collaboration across departments, and the quality and feasibility of the networks’ plans.
At its meeting on 15 June, the Committee for Research decided to award each of the twelve networks SEK 625,000 per year for three years (2027-2029). In total, SEK 7.5 million per year has been allocated to the initiative.
The networks awarded funding are:

- Translational Geroscience Network at KI (TANGO)
- Centre for AI Innovation (CAII Network)
- Precision Nutrition Network (PNET): Understanding Nutrition from Cell to Society
- Stress Across System Levels: From Molecular Mechanisms to Mental, Physical and Societal Health
- Amyloid Diseases: From Molecular Mechanisms to Treatment
- KI Research Network for Sustainable Healthcare Within Planetary Boundaries
- POINTER: A Network for Psychosis Research and Intervention
- KEEN: Karolinska Institutet’s Exposome Research Network
- Research Network in Medical Education
- Faculty-wide Network for Qualitative Researchers at KI
Will continue their activities
The interdisciplinary network initiative aims to strengthen the quality of research at KI by creating meeting places for researchers from different departments and disciplines. The networks may, for example, use the funding to initiate new collaborations, organise seminars and workshops, and support early-career researchers.
Networks that were awarded funding through the 2024 call will continue their activities during 2027. The networks are monitored on an ongoing basis by the Committee for Research. Follow-up reports show that they have largely achieved the objectives of the initiative by creating interdisciplinary forums, strengthening collaboration across departments, and contributing to new research partnerships that span disciplinary and campus boundaries.
