Torbjörn Tomson, professor at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience, has been awarded the European Epileptology Award. The award is presented by the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE), and Tomson is receiving it in recognition of his work to advance knowledge of anti-epileptic drugs and epilepsy during pregnancy, amongst other achievements.

"I am, of course, deeply honoured to receive this European award, which is presented every two years by our international professional and scientific organisation. I see it as a token of appreciation for the long-term work that colleagues both at KI and around the world have carried out to improve the treatment of people with epilepsy, with a focus on safe pregnancies and survival,” says Torbjörn Tomson.

He explains that these are projects that have been running for more than a quarter of a century, in which thousands of participants have demonstrated both perseverance and a willingness to cooperate.

Torbjörn Tomson obtained his medical degree and PhD at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, where he later became a professor of neurology. He has also served as a senior consultant and head of the epilepsy unit at the Department of Neurology at Karolinska University Hospital. His research has focused on drug treatment, epidemiology and, in particular, issues relating to pregnancy. His most significant contributions include research into sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) and pregnancy outcomes in relation to the mother’s use of various anti-epileptic drugs.

Lasting impact on epilepsy care

The ILAE’s citation for the award, which has now been announced, reads:

“Torbjörn Tomson’s pioneering research, his leading role in the development of guidelines, and his commitment to mentoring generations of clinicians and researchers have had a profound and lasting impact on the care of epilepsy in Europe and internationally. The committee particularly highlights his pioneering work in advancing knowledge of anti-epileptic drugs and epilepsy during pregnancy, which has significantly shaped clinical practice and improved outcomes for people with epilepsy and their families."

The ILAE’s 16th European Epilepsy Congress and awards ceremony will be held in Athens, Greece, on 5–9 September 2026. In addition to the European Epileptology Award, the ILAE also presents the European Epilepsy Education Award, the European Epilepsy Service Award and the European Young Investigator Award.
