Do you feel that gambling is negatively affecting your finances or your life? Do you want help to gain control of the situation and at the same time contribute to better understanding and help for people with gambling problems? Researchers at Karolinska Institutet are now conducting a study in which we want to better understand the needs of Arabic-speaking help-seekers and investigate how we can best reach this group.
Gambling problems
Gambling often starts as something fun and exciting, sometimes it can be a moment of break if life feels hard. It can be card games with friends or different types of betting or casino games on the phone. Sometimes gambling goes too far and you lose control, it can be that you gamble for more than you intended, that you think a lot about gambling or need to come up with emergency lies for why the money is gone.
You get help to gain control or stop gambling
The support line for gamblers and relatives offers counselling for gambling problems in Arabic. Once you have signed up and answered a number of questions, you will be offered an appointment for counselling where you will receive practical advice and support in making a behavioural change that suits you. If you are interested in follow-up, there is the opportunity to do so.
You can take part in the study if you:
- Experience problems with your gambling
- Speak Arabic
- Are between 18-64 years old
- Have access to a smart phone
What happens to my data?
The project will collect and record information about you. We will collect information regarding background facts such as your age, marital status and occupation. We will also ask questions about your gambling. Your answers, together with the other participants' answers to the same questions, will form the basis of this research study. No unauthorized persons will take part of your answers and the results are reported at group level, which means that it is not possible to determine what individual participants have answered.
The data controller for the processing of your personal data is Karolinska Institutet and your data will not be shared with any other actor or authority. According to the EU's General Data Protection Regulation, you have the right to access the data about you that is processed in the study free of charge, and if necessary, to have any errors corrected. You can also request that data about you is deleted and that the processing of your personal data is restricted.
