New treatment for PTSD: Oxygen in a hyperbaric chamber shows promising results
Researchers in Israel have found that (HBOT) may alleviate PTSD, a mental health condition affecting many after traumatic events.
Anders Kjellberg’s research explores hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), a treatment involving breathing pure oxygen in a hyperbaric chamber, previously used for conditions like carbon monoxide poisoning and decompression sickness.
The study, published in The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, involving 63 military veterans, showed significant improvements in PTSD symptoms after 60 sessions over 12 weeks. MRI scans also revealed changes in brain areas linked to PTSD. The treatment promotes cellular recovery and reduces chronic inflammation.
Results revealed improvements in self-reported symptoms and brain structure changes. The therapy is believed to reduce chronic inflammation and support cellular recovery. Despite minor side effects, the study provides hope for innovative PTSD treatment options.
