New statistical report: Suicide statistics for Stockholm County 2010–2024

The National centre for suicide research and prevention (NASP) has published a new annual report that provides an overview of suicide statistics for Sweden as a whole and for the country’s 21 counties. The report focuses on the 15-year period 2010–2024 and includes more detailed statistics for municipalities in Stockholm County.

During 2010–2024, a total of 22,888 people (aged 15 years and older) died by suicide in Sweden (including deaths classified as suicide with determined or undetermined intent). This corresponds to an average of 1,526 suicides per year and an average suicide rate of 18.4 per 100,000 inhabitants.

During the same 15-year period, 4,837 people died by suicide in Stockholm County – an average of 322 per year – or about one person per day. The number of suicides varies between municipalities, largely reflecting differences in population size and demography. Different geographical areas are therefore compared using suicide rates (the number of suicides per 100,000 inhabitants).

The report shows that suicide by poisoning, jumping from a height, and jumping or placing oneself in front of a moving object were more common in Stockholm County compared with Sweden as a whole.

About the suicide statistics

The statistical data have been processed and compiled by statisticians at NASP. The data are based on the National Board of Health and Welfare’s Cause of Death Register and population data provided by Statistics Sweden (SCB).

NASP is responsible for monitoring the development of suicide and self-harm in Sweden. By mapping risk groups and trends in suicide statistics, we contribute knowledge that supports suicide prevention action plans and preventive public health efforts.

On our statistics pages, information is updated annually about:

Suicides in municipalities outside Stockholm County (in 2024) are summarised in a separate report.
