KI celebrated this year’s master’s scholarship recipients at a ceremony

On 15 October, 17 new master’s students who have been awarded scholarships for their studies at KI were recognised. At a joint ceremony, they received their awards from KI’s President Annika Östman Wernerson and celebrated with friends and family.
The ceremony took place in the Faculty Club on the tenth floor of Biomedicum, where the evening began with sparkling wine, canapés and networking. Behind every scholarship and achievement is a journey to KI that begins far from Sweden. Like Oliver Jianfei Luo, a scholarship recipient from China who recently started the master’s programme in biomedicine:
“The scholarship gives me the opportunity to pursue my interest in biomedicine in an environment shaped by curiosity and collaboration. I am very grateful for this opportunity and for the chance to deepen my knowledge in research,” he says.
His parents, who had come to visit for the ceremony, were also present.
“We are very proud that Oliver has been awarded KI’s Global Master’s Scholarship and, with it, the opportunity to study at KI. It feels fantastic to see him follow his dreams,” says Mantian Wang and Lei Luo.

Stood out in tough competition
All scholarship recipients come from countries outside the EU and have been awarded scholarships from either Karolinska Institutet or the Swedish Institute in tough competition. The scholarships are awarded to particularly well-qualified students admitted to various master’s programmes at KI.
– This year, we received more applications than usual and the competition was very strong. Many well-qualified students applied, but these students really stood out and had the highest merit ratings in their respective programmes, says Fredrik Hedman, coordinator at the Education Support Office.
From scholarship ceremony to conversation with the President
The host for the evening was master’s student Ann Marie Martinou, who introduced each scholarship recipient before they received their diplomas from KI’s President. After the presentation, she interviewed president Annika Östman Wernerson about KI as a global university and the importance of international students.
The President highlighted, among other things, how students from different parts of the world strengthen KI through their experiences and perspectives, and how KI in turn can learn from them. She also expressed the hope that the students will take their experiences from KI with them out into the world and continue to be part of the KI community long after graduation.
Warm congratulations to all scholarship recipients and good luck with your studies at KI!
