Abstract

In healthcare algorithms, for example, clinical risk scores or AI models, bias can emerge through the interaction of at least four levels: the social structures that generate inequities, the data that captures these inequities, the algorithms trained on that data, and the healthcare institutions that deploy and act on algorithmic outputs. This workshop will offer some practical tools to participants related to bias and fairness of healthcare algorithms. In small groups, participants will map how bias enters and compounds across the social, data, algorithmic, and institutional levels of a healthcare algorithm, followed by plenary discussions. Relevant readings will be circulated in advance.

Please note that there will be some overlap between this workshop and the seminar in the morning with Tibor Varga. We recommend that early career researchers prioritize the workshop, and faculty prioritize the talk.
