Lectures and seminars Seminar: Deaths potentially averted by small changes in physical activity and sedentary time

KI Lifestyle4Health seminar
Speakers: Maria Hagströmer & Ing‑Mari Dohrn
About the speakers
Maria Hagströmer is a Professor of Physiotherapy at the Division of Physiotherapy, Department of NVS, Karolinska Institutet. Her research focuses on objectively measured physical activity, the relationship between movement and health, and the impact of exercise interventions on both behavior and clinical outcomes. Her work on epidemiology, methodological development and intervention research and plays an important role in advancing population level assessment of physical activity.
Ing‑Mari Dohrn is Associate Professor and Assistant Senior Lecturer at the Division of Physiotherapy, Department of NVS. The main focus of her research is on physical activity and sedentary behavior, with extensive expertise in accelerometry and long‑term cohort analysis. She has a clinical background in primary care and has contributed to national initiatives such as Physical Activity on Prescription (FaR in Swedish). Her studies examine how objectively measured activity and sedentary time relate to mortality, morbidity, and physical function, complemented by qualitative research exploring individuals’ experiences and contextual factors
Seminar description
Prof. Maria Hagströmer and Assoc. Prof. Ing‑Mari Dohrn, co‑authors of a newly published Lancet study, will present findings from this large meta‑analysis quantifying how small, feasible shifts in daily movement patterns could substantially reduce premature mortality at the population level.
Drawing on harmonized data from prospective cohort studies across several countries, the research team estimated the number of deaths that could potentially be prevented if adults increased their light or moderate‑to‑vigorous physical activity by modest amounts, or reduced daily sedentary time, without structured exercise programs.
