Dr. Yingbin Liu, a leading biliary and pancreatic surgeon and oncologist, has been engaged in the field of hepatobiliary and pancreatic cancer between bedside and bench since 1984. His current research is focused on comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of biliary and pancreatic tumors, and on tumorigenesis and heterogeneity of tumor microenvironment.
Dr. Liu accomplished an innovative study on binding pancreaticojejunostomy anastomosis technique in 2005, which made a significant breakthrough in clinical surgery. In addition, he put forward the concept of total mesopancreas excision for pancreatic head carcinoma for the first time in China.
His research also cast a light on understanding the mechanisms that underlie hepatobiliary and pancreatic cancer. He identified somatic mutation and single cell heterogeneity of gallbladder cancer, and proposed the key tumor-driving genes and signal pathways (e.g. ErbB signal pathway) and their regulations on microenvironment. He has supervised more than 30 postgraduate and Ph.D. students and post-doctoral scholars and published more than 70 papers in peer-reviewed journals, including Nature Genetics, Cancer Cell, Journal of Hepatology, Gut and many others, in the research field of stomach, liver and gallbladder cancers.
Dr. Liu’s clinical and research contributions have been acknowledged by numerous awards, including Distinguished Professor of Yangtze River Scholars, Laureate of National ‘May 1st’ Labor Medal, and National Science and Technology Award.
