Dr. Foxman studies antiviral defense in the human respiratory tract, focusing on innate immunity. A major area of research is to define how recent exposures affect susceptibility to later respiratory infections, including how common cold viruses can trigger protection against unrelated viruses. Her lab has also uncovered mechanisms behind severe inflammation caused by normally mild cold viruses and identified biomarkers that track mucosal innate immune responses in humans.
