Campus Solna ScilifeLab - Room Air&Fire

The SciLifeLab Spotlight seminar is a high-profile seminar series that aims to invite leading scientists making a major impact in the field of biosciences to come to present their ongoing research at Campus Solna.
The intention is to promote an active intellectual environment at Campus Solna via networking with excellent national and international researchers to fuel new ideas and foster collaborations.

Spotlight Seminar 9 June

Deborah Williamson (University of St Andrews School of Medicine, UK)

Seminar Title: Applying innovate genomic approaches to the detection and control of infectious diseases

Background

Professor Williamson is Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Head of the School of Medicine. She has held strategic leadership roles in academia and public health agencies across Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. She is a clinician-scientist with a global network of collaborators and over 300 journal publications. Her work has attracted significant research funding and has been recognized with awards such as the L’Oreal-UNESCO Women in Science Fellowship.

Her research focuses on the development and application of innovative technologies, particularly genomics, to address infectious diseases. Professor Williamson has a strong clinical and public health background in microbiology and virology and remains actively engaged in clinical and public health service.

Abstract

Advances in genomics and diagnostics are transforming how we detect, monitor, and respond to infectious diseases. This talk highlights emerging tools and approaches that combine rapid diagnostic techniques with genomic insights to support real-time public health action. It explores the potential of new technologies to enhance sensitivity, specificity, and accessibility of testing, and examines how these innovations can be applied across a range of settings and pathogens. Drawing on global collaborations and practical examples, the presentation emphasizes the value of integrated strategies in strengthening infectious disease control and preparedness worldwide.

Meet-the-speaker Fika

After the seminar a small group of PhD students and PostDocs (~10-12 people) are invited to join a fika with the speaker. This is a great opportunity to ask questions about their science and careers. Click here for sign up sheet. Please register for the meet-the-speaker fika before 6 June. Email the SciLifelab PhD&PostDoc Council if you don't manage to sign up for the fika via the form.
