Lectures and seminars MEB seminar: Professor Fredrik Charpentier
Speaker: Professor Fredrik Charpentier from Stockholm University
Title
Decreasing differences between EU member states since the turn of the millennium
Abstract
How similar or how different are the countries of contemporary today – politically, demographically, economically, socially and culturally? In most respects, the differences within the EU/EEA have decreased significantly since the turn of the millennium in the economy, demography, public health, gender equality, and cultural values. However, in some value issues and in the health among older men, the legacy of the former “Iron Curtain” between the East and the West seems to persist – while the differences between predominately Protestant and predominately Catholic countries in the EU/EEA have largely disappeared. In terms of social and cultural values, there are also large differences between age groups within several countries, which are frequently greater than those between countries.
