Scientific presentation skills: How to convey your message efficiently in science and teaching

Abstract

Presenting your research live to an audience is something we all have to do as researchers. Despite these important communication moments, we are never trained in stage presentation techniques or basic voice training. In this presentation, I will build on my own experiences from teaching and presenting research the last 25 years in different contexts. I will build this presentation around my experiences as a stage performer of opera theatre, and how I use those techniques in my work as a scientist. With respect to stage presentation, I will discuss voice, posture, pacing and techniques for giving yourself credibility and presenting yourself in the best possible way. I will also discuss how to deal with nervousness and stress. I will give examples of exercises for how you can practice on your own and with others. This talk was presented to the MEB doctoral students in Dec 2025.

About the speaker

Anna Johansson is docent and assistant professor at MEB, Karolinska Institutet. She has a background in statistics and cancer epidemiology. She received her PhD in 2016 and is Guest Researcher the Cancer Registry of Norway since 2019. Her research focuses on population-based cancer epidemiology within (i) pregnancy-associated cancer, (ii) clinical breast cancer outcomes and (iii) cancer trends in the NORDCAN/ANCR collaboration. Anna also has long experience as a stage performer in opera theatre including >25 years of voice training.
