Lectures and seminars Lecture with Virginia Dignum, Professor of Responsible Artificial Intelligence at Umeå University
Karolinska Institutet welcomes Professor Virginia Dignum, Professor of Responsible Artificial Intelligence at Umeå University and an internationally recognised scholar in the field. She leads the AI Policy Lab and is one of Europe’s foremost experts on the ethical, societal and governance‑related dimensions of artificial intelligence.
Virginia Dignum’s research focuses on the interplay between people, organisations and technology, with particular attention to how autonomous intelligent systems can be designed and governed in ways that are morally sustainable, transparent and socially responsible. Her work includes the development of models for agency, decision‑making and social interaction, as well as studies of how humans and autonomous systems collaborate within complex socio‑technical environments.
Beyond her academic work, she contributes to several international expert bodies, including the United Nations Advisory Body on AI, the Global Partnership on AI, and expert groups at UNESCO and the OECD. She is also a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences and a Fellow of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence.

This lecture is part of a series leading up to the forthcoming joint call from the Swedish Research Council and Vinnova within the excellence clusters for groundbreaking technologies. The initiative aims to strengthen Sweden’s position in strategically important technology areas by building strong research and innovation environments capable of making the country a global leader in future technologies.
In the government mandate to the Swedish Research Council and Vinnova, excellence clusters are required to include research from the social sciences and humanities. The intention is to ensure that technological development is not only scientifically advanced, but also ethically, socially and legally grounded, and that its consequences for individuals and society are thoroughly examined. This perspective is essential for creating long‑term sustainable research environments and strengthening Sweden’s position in future technology domains.
