Insect pollinators and climate change: The effects of temperature on insect pollinator sensing, cognition and behaviour

Speaker: Professor Emily Baird

About the speaker

Emily Baird studied at the Australian National University, where she received a BA degree (majoring in Social and Political Theory, 2002), a BSc Hons I (majoring in Neuroscience, 2003) and a PhD (2008) focussing on honeybee vision and flight control. She then moved to Sweden where she became a postdoctoral researcher (2008-2014) and group leader (2014-2018) in the Lund Vision Group at Lund University, before her appointment as a Senior Lecturer (2018-2024) and Professor (2024-) in the Department of Zoology at Stockholm University, where she is currently still working.

Baird’s research uses ecological studies, behaviour, sensory physiology and morphology to understand insect sensory ecology and cognition. Her work currently focuses on how insects navigate and orient and how their behaviour and ecosystem services are affected by rapid environmental changes, such as shifts in light and temperature.

Seminar description

Title: Insect pollinators and climate change: The effects of temperature on insect pollinator sensing, cognition and behaviour

The role played by climate change in the drastic decline of insect pollinators has to date been studied primarily by assessing changes in their abundance or geographical range. While the ability for pollinators to provide ecosystem services also depends on their capacity to acquire, process and respond to environmental information, the effect of climate change on this capacity has been largely overlooked. In this talk, Prof. Emily will present the work her lab has been doing to understand how increasing temperatures affect sensing, cognition and behaviour in insect pollinators and the consequences that this may have for the ecosystem services they provide under climate change.
