Is it only a technology challenge or should technology make the step to adapt to people’s and researchers’ needs and concerns?

Welcome to HI Conversations

Nowadays, almost everybody is convinced of the importance of Open Science and Open Data. However, even the number of researchers looking for open data before starting a new study is high, the number of those making available the data they have collected decreases a lot.

According to the European Commission final report on the European Research Data Landscape, researchers and scientists have a strong preference on storing their data to personal or institutional local data storages followed by a lower preference to Research Data Repositories and Institutional cloud storage services and even less to Research data repositories and as supplementary material to publications.

There seems to be a skepticism in sharing data which is among the challenges towards shaping the future AI & ML in Data Science. Contemporary approaches for keeping the user in the center of the technological innovation, like Living Labs do, can shape the way towards technology that remove barriers and scientists concerns and fears in data sharing and opening, making available the existing wealth of data. Such barriers include the lack of recognition, data misinterpretation, perceived effort and cost associated and legal restrictions.
