Speaker: Prof. Mette Sørensen, the Danish Cancer Institute

Mette Sørensen, Danish Cancer Institute and Professor at Roskilde University, Denmark

Mette Sørensen is a Senior Researcher at the Danish Cancer Institute and Professor at Roskilde University, with a distinguished career at the intersection of environmental exposures and human health. She holds a Master’s degree in Human Biology (1998) and a PhD in Environmental Epidemiology (2003), both from the University of Copenhagen.

She is internationally recognized as a leading authority on the health impacts of traffic road noise. Her pioneering research has leveraged large population cohorts to uncover novel links between environmental noise and a wide range of diseases. She was one of the first to demonstrate associations between road traffic noise and conditions such as stroke, diabetes, overweight, and breast cancer—significantly expanding the understanding of how our environment shapes public health.

Beyond advancing the field of environmental epidemiology, her work has influenced public health policy and urban planning in Denmark, and has been instrumental for international organizations such as the World Health Organization.

In this seminar, Professor Sørensen will provide an overview of the current evidence on the relationship between road traffic noise and human health. She will also present findings from her work using a nationwide cohort in Denmark, and discuss key research gaps that remain.
