The stage in Erling Persson Hall was brightly decorated with balloons and flowers as around 400 master’s students gathered to take part in the ceremony on 29 August. Hosts Gottfrid Rehnman and Gabriela Kazmierczak guided the audience through the programme with warmth, humour, and anecdotes from their own time as KI students.

KI President Annika Östman Wernerson welcomed the students and also shared personal memories from her own studies at KI. She was followed by Professor Rune Brautaset, vice chair of education, who gave a brief look back at KI’s history and encouraging words for the journey now ahead.

Also present was Alessia Compagno Strandberg, chair of the medical student union’s welcome committee, who spoke about student life, opportunities to get involved in various activities, and the importance of building community during your studies.

One of the highlights of the ceremony was the panel discussion, where the hosts interviewed three students from different programmes at KI. The discussion offered both humour and personal reflections – an engaging way to give new students insight into what lies ahead.

Connecting with the KI community

After the ceremony, the day continued with a fair and mingle session in Aula Medica. Representatives from various parts of KI – including the Student Wellbeing Centre, the Health Hub and the University Library (KIB) – were on site to meet students, answer questions and provide information about the support and resources available throughout their studies.

As always, the cinnamon bun “fika” was a popular feature, along with the distribution of the much-loved KI backpacks – a memorable takeaway from the first day as a student.

On 5 September, a welcome day was held for national students
