Virginia Braun lectured on quality thematic analysis
On a sunny Friday in October, KI was visited by Virginia Braun, professor of psychology at the Faculty of Science at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. She was invited by Doctoral Programme in Health Care Science (PUF-V) and Dalarna University to give a lecture on what is important in qualitative thematic analysis.
Virginia Braun highlighted and explained core concepts for quality in thematic analysis, with an emphasis on reflexive thematic analysis. She also discussed navigating different competing demands or expectations – which can work against quality – including the challenge of some of the widely used “quality” criteria and checklists.
It was a popular and well-attended lecture in the Christina Larsdotter Hall in Solna, despite the relatively short notice of the invitation. Over 130 people attended, with the first 100 registering within 24 hours.
About Virginia Braun’s research
In my research, I am interested in examining the relationship between the social, the scientific and the individual, in relation to meaning and practice around bodies, sexuality and health. My research examines interconnections between culture and society and individual 'choices', thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, as well as on broader issues like public health policy and practice. I typically work with qualitative methodologies within critical theory frameworks. I am also a qualitative methodologist, meaning I explore and write about qualitative methodologies and the doing of qualitative research as practice - part of a longstanding collaboration with Victoria Clarke. We are most known for thematic analysis.
