This year's Ulf von Euler Lecture ‘Treatment of Metabolic Diseases with Gut Hormones’ will be given by Jens Juul Holst, professor of medical physiology at the Department of Biomedical Sciences, and senior group leader at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Centre for Basic Metabolic Research, both at the University of Copenhagen. The lecture will take place on 8 November.

Professor Holst's scientific work has focused on the regulatory peptides of the pancreas and the gut, and their importance in the regulation of the functions of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and metabolism.

Amongst Jens Juul Holst's remarkable scientific achievements is the discovery of glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), a gut hormone  that regulates insulin secretion, appetite, and food intake. He has developed pioneer work on understanding the role of (GLP-1) and gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP) on the regulation of blood glucose and appetite, obesity, and diabetes.

The Ulf von Euler Lecture is an official annual named lecture of Karolinska Institutet. It was instituted by decision of the faculty at KI upon an initiative taken by Ulf von Euler's former students at the time of his passing away in 1983.
