Francesco Cosentino is professor in cardiology at the Department of Medicine Solna, Karolinska Institutet, and a senior physician at the Karolinska University Hospital. He was awarded the honorary title for his special contributions to the progress of medicine in general, and cardiology and diabetology in particular.

“Professor Cosentino is a worldwide example of healthcare professional, who managed to bring about a major paradigm change in first-line pharmacological treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes”, says the dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Bogdan Timar, in a press release.

Professor Octavian Crețu, rector of Victor Babeș University, specially highlights Francesco Cosentino's part in the development of the ESC guidelines for the treatment of patients with diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases. The guidelines overturn conservative approaches and advocate the use of new glucose-lowering agents (SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP1 receptor agonists) as first-line drugs instead of metformin.

"It is currently known that these treatments, in addition to the beneficial glucose-lowering effect, extend the patient's life and reduce the risk of developing conditions such as heart attack, stroke, heart failure and chronic kidney disease", says Professor Octavian Crețu in the same press release.

The ceremony was held at the Victor Babeș University of Medicine and Pharmacy on October 12.
