Newsletter from the Infrastructure Board – Spring 2025

Summary of current decisions and ongoing processes regarding research infrastructure at Karolinska Institutet. The Infrastructure Board also invites you to a dialogue meeting to discuss current and future needs for of the university's research infrastructure.
New strategy for research infrastructure 2025–2028
The Infrastructure Board has adopted a new strategy to develop Karolinska Institutet’s research infrastructure. The strategy aims to ensure that KI researchers have access to relevant and advanced infrastructure, which is essential for conducting high-quality research. The new strategy covers the period 2025–2028.
Improved governance and follow-up of core facilities
The Internal Audit has recommended that KI develop more systematic governance procedures to improve the efficiency of core facility usage. A new steering document will be produced to clarify the quality system for research infrastructure.
A new follow-up format has also been decided: dialogue meetings will be held on-site every other year, and digitally in the intervening years. Core facility directors, heads of department, and administrative managers will participate. After each meeting, an action plan will be developed and followed up annually by the Infrastructure Board.
International evaluation of KI’s infrastructure portfolio
In autumn 2026, KI is scheduled to receive a visit from an international advisory panel that will evaluate the university’s research infrastructure portfolio. More information about the process and how researchers can get involved will be provided in due course.
Clearer guidelines for the use of infrastructure funding
The Infrastructure Board has decided that operational support from the Swedish Research Council’s call for research infrastructure of national interest may not be used for research involving salaries for doctoral students, postdocs, or assistant professors. This decision takes effect from 1 January 2026.
New process for establishing core facilities
A new process for establishing core facilities has been adopted. If the technology already exists at KI, current users will be contacted to assess needs and interest. If the technology is not available at KI, the need can be raised at the annual open dialogue meetings. The Infrastructure Board will then decide whether a strategic investment is appropriate.
Needs assessment ahead of VR’s call for proposals in 2027
KI has initiated the internal process for identifying research infrastructure needs of national interest ahead of the Swedish Research Council’s upcoming call for proposals. Deans have been asked to submit supporting documentation by 15 September 2025. The Infrastructure Board will discuss the proposed needs at its meeting on 7 October 2025.
Increased focus on the use of NAISS
NAISS, the national infrastructure for supercomputing resources, is expanding rapidly. The Infrastructure Board wants to see increased use of NAISS among KI researchers and is working to lower the threshold for access. Johan Lagerros at the IT Department is continuing the dialogue with NAISS management.
Discuss your needs for methods and technologies within research - open dialogue meetings in Flemingsberg and Solna
The Infrastructure Board at Karolinska Institutet is inviting all researchers to participate in an open dialogue meeting this November, held in both Flemingsberg and Solna, to discuss the current and future needs of the university's research infrastructures.
Register for one of the meetings in Flemingsberg (10:00-11:00) or in Solna (15:00-16:00) on Tuesday, 11 November 2025, no later than 7 November 2025.
Welcome!
