Bill Gates visited Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital last Friday at his own initiative to discuss the latest advances in Swedish Alzheimer’s research, a field that interests him and that he supports.

Professor Andrea Varrone at Karolinska Institutet has been awarded over USD 1.4 million from the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. The grant will be used to lead a study that can advance Parkinson’s research by evaluating a new tracer designed to reveal what happens in the brain as the disease develops.

Sergiu Catrina, associate professor of endocrinology at Karolinska Institutet and medical director at the Center for diabetes, has been awarded a three-year research grant of just over USD 1 million from the American organisation Breakthrough T1D. The grant funds a study investigating the effect of the drug roxadustat on kidney oxygenation in individuals with type 1 diabetes.

Pete Williams, researcher at Karolinska Institutet and St. Erik Eye Hospital, has been awarded a research grant from the American Glaucoma Foundation to develop a treatment for glaucoma and other eye diseases. With the grant of USD 75,000 (SEK 840,000), the Foundation wants to recognize groundbreaking, innovative glaucoma research. This is the second time Pete Williams has received the grant.

Docent Sara Hägg, together with a multidisciplinary team of KI researcher, has been awarded an NIH Prime Grant for their research on repurposing drugs for the primary prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease. The grant is for three years with the option to apply for additional two years.

Researchers at KI have received funding from the United States Army for the development of genetic engineering methods to alleviate or cure the disease Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), the most common form of genetic neuromuscular disease in children.
