We congratulate Mats Holmberg at the Department of Medicine, Huddinge, on his appointment as Docent in Endocrinology on 15 October 2026.

What does this appointment mean to you?

A great deal. More than anything it improves my possibilities to continue with and expand my research. There is no shortage of ideas but money is always needed to fulfill them. My dream is to be able to employ a research assistant to help with all the administrative work.

What do you hope to achieve in your new role as a docent?

I hope to expand my research with more projects and continue to publish in high ranked journals. I hope to establish a new national course for endocrinologists. And I hope to continue to lecture in medicine and outside of medicine. I have a solid belief in science as a way to improve society and I believe my new role will further enhance possibilities to actually make a difference.

What projects are you currently working on?

A lot of my current endocrine research involves effects of gender-affirming hormonal therapy in the transgender group. Me and my PhD students work on a diverse palette of outcomes, such as immunological consequences, cardiovascular consequences, pain threshold consequences and psychological consequences. Somewhat outside of the endocrinological field I am also PI for a large study on detransition in the transgender group. Plus sexual dysfunction in young men.
